Advancement of Orthodontics

Advancements in orthodontic treatment, has made it possible for everyone to enjoy a better smile. It used to be that brackets and wires were always made of stainless steel. The disadvantage of stainless steel appliances is that they stretch and wear, causing your orthodontist to replace wires more frequently.

NASA’s technological developments even contributed to the development of orthodontics. The nickel titanium alloy that NASA uses to deploy satellites into space has become a regular material for the initial orthodontic procedure phase.

Nitinol wires have two very unique properties: shape memory and superelasticity. These wires are able to "remember" its original form even after being bent.

So next time you hear Dr. Finkelmeier say use a NiTi wire, you can thank NASA for their developments!
